'Heart of Canterbury'
(Acrylic on Canvas, 180 x 180cm) |
|
This painting has been specially created for Kent and Canterbury Hospital to mark the opening of the new outpatients waiting area 2009. It has been generously funded by the hospital's League of Friends. The painting hopes to bring vibrancy, add interest and make visits more pleasurable.
The artwork highlights the vibrancy and core of Canterbury's proud history and significant landmarks, including the towering and beautiful Cathedral, John Dane's Garden, contained by the city wall where people are shown relaxing and making the most of the weather, and the historic beamed buildings which are intertwined with the river and boats.
The piece has been painted in a stylized way inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s and 1930s. Art and architecture often had bold, crisp forms and lines that looked dynamic, and simplified everyday surroundings and objects. This style pays homage to Kent and Canterbury hospital itself, which was opened in 1937 and is typical of an Art Deco style building.
